    Tri My Best Triathlon

    Tri My Best Triathlon

Academy of Pediatric Physical Therapy, APTA, Annual Conference (SoPAC)
    November 8, 2015 * Children's Institute, Pittsburgh, PA

The Academy of Pediatric Physical Therapy of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) will be sponsoring a Tri My Best Triathlon in conjunction with the Academy of Pediatric Physical Therapy Annual Conference (SoPAC) in Pittsburgh, PA. This initiative seeks to support the Academy of Pediatric Physical Therapy mission to represent pediatric physical therapy and serve as a collective voice to support provision of the highest quality physical therapy services to children, their families, and adults with developmental disabilities. It will also emphasize supporting the Section's vision of transforming society by optimizing movement to improve the human experience for all children, adults with developmental disabilities and their families.

    PREVIEW!

This Tri My Best Triathlon is for individuals aged 5-21 years with developmental disabilities. Twenty athletes will compete in swim, bike, and run events with adaptations and modifications. Each athlete will have two volunteer buddies to assist them. Athletes must have ridden a bike before, even if with modifications and assistance. Athletes also must be comfortable in the pool with flotation devices and assistance.

    Athlete Referral:

    • 50% of the athletes (10) will be reserved for clients of Children's Institute in appreciation for all they are doing to support the Triathlon (e.g., donating facility, pool, life guards, physician, equipment, and community volunteers).
    • The remaining 10 athletes will be chosen from the referred athletes by a random drawing.
    • One additional athlete will be chosen by the staff at NDTP, Inc, from previous Tri My Best Triathlons to attend SoPAC's Triathlon as a mentor for the athletes and a spokesperson at the Opening Ceremonies.
    • Athlete registration is open and will close August 30.
    • Athlete registration is $5.00 and will be collected at a later date.
    • All referred athletes will be notified of their participation by early August.
    • To refer an athlete from the Pittsburgh area, click here.

    Volunteer Registration:

    • Volunteer buddies will be limited to 40.
    • Course registration will not be limited; you can attend the course and not volunteer for the Triathlon.
    • To be a volunteer buddy and assist an athlete throughout the Triathlon, you must register for and attend the two Sunday sessions at SoPAC 2015, Community-based Physical Fitness Opportunity for Individuals with Developmental Disabilities: Tri My Best Triathlon Part 1: Preparation & Volunteer Training and Part 2: Event Execution - The Best Part.
    • Following the Part 1 course, volunteers will be transported to the race site at The Children's Institute where they will participate in Part 2, the Triathlon.
    • Therapists referring an athlete and who also want to be their volunteer buddy will be given first consideration. The other volunteer buddies will be by random drawing from those registering to volunteer.
    • Volunteer registration is open and will close August 30.
    • All registered volunteers will be notified of their participation by early August.
    • Those who register to be a volunteer buddy by clicking here will also be required to register for SoPAC at www.sopac.us.
