As part of the Section on Pediatrics Annual Conference (SoPAC) in Anaheim, California, November 8-10, 2013, the Section on Pediatrics of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) will send a family with special needs to Disneyland. This year, the emphasis will be on supporting the mission of the Section on Pediatrics, which is to promote the highest quality of life for all children, people with developmental disabilities, and their families. It will also emphasize supporting the Section's Strategic Plan goals of advocating for pediatric physical therapy and promoting physical fitness.

Applicants must:

  • Be between the ages of 2 and 21
  • Have not visited Walt Disney World or Disneyland before
  • Reside in Region I (Alaska, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, and Washington)
  • Have a developmental delay or an impairment, as defined by IDEA (autism, deaf-blindness, deafness, emotional disturbance, hearing impairment, intellectual disability, multiple disabilities, orthopedic impairment, other health impairment, specific learning disability, speech or language impairment, traumatic brain injury or visual impairment including blindness)
  • Be referred by a physical therapist, physical therapist assistant, student physical therapist, or student physical therapist assistant who is a member of the Section on Pediatrics of APTA

The Section on Pediatrics will fund a family of four for 4 days at Disneyland® to include travel by car (not to exceed $500), three complimentary nights in a Signature Suite at the Disneyland® Hotel, a complimentary Character Experience meal for four at Goofy's Kitchen, an additional meal stipend (not to exceed $500), a recognition ceremony, four complimentary 3-day park-hopper tickets, family registration fees for SoPAC Fun Run (if held), one complimentary SoPAC registration for a parent or guardian, and an AmTryke (compliments of AMBUCS). The referring therapist will also receive a complimentary SoPAC registration.

The family will be required to attend the Recognition Ceremony and appear at the Section on Pediatrics booth in the Exhibit Hall (times to be determined). A member of the family is also encouraged to participate in a Roundtable Discussion. Because physical activity and fitness are important to all of us, the recipient and family are also encouraged to participate in the Section on Pediatrics Fun Run, if held.

The referring therapist is required to attend SoPAC, the Recognition Ceremony, and appear at the Section's booth in the Exhibit Hall with the family. The referring therapist is also encouraged to participate in the Roundtable Discussion and the Section on Pediatrics Fun Run, if held.

The applicant and the referring therapist must complete their sections of the application. The questions on the family's section and the therapist's section of the application reflect the mission of the Section on Pediatrics and the goals of advocating for pediatric physical therapy and promoting physical fitness. It is suggested that the therapist print the application from the Section website and assist the family in filling out their sections. It will then be up to the referring therapist to actually complete the application online by filling in the parent's information, as well as the therapist's referral information. All questions must be answered on the family's section and the therapist's section in order to be considered. There is no limit to the number of families that any therapist may refer, but a complete application must be submitted for each referral.

Applications must be received by June 1, 2013, at 11:59 pm EST. Applications received after the submission deadline will not be considered.

All applications will be reviewed for completeness. All complete applications will be entered into a random drawing to determine the winner.

The winner will be announced at APTA's Annual Conference in June and will be notified by phone and letter with additional information to follow.
